There are many common misconceptions about winter driving. These include the belief that all season tires are sufficient for traction and control in snowy conditions or that those vehicles with Anti-Lock Brake Systems (ABS), traction control, and/or vehicle dynamic control systems are designed to better handle treacherous driving conditions. Also, drivers of SUVs and other four wheel or all wheel drive vehicles sometimes believe that they are also better equipped to handle winter roads when in fact a four wheel drive will not help you stop or slow down in a vehicle any faster than your common sedan. What will is a quality set of winter tires, also known as snow tires. The experts at Access Roadside Assistance have seen one too many emergency road services calls come in as the result of incorrect tire usage in incremental driving conditions. In an effort to better educate their emergency road services members, and the general driving public, on how to pick the best winter tire for their vehicles, Access has compiled the following list of recommendations:
• Purchase separate rims for your snow tires to save you the headache and financial burden of having to continually change over and balance your tires from season to season. This will also prolong the life of the tire autel maxisys mini ms905.
• Make sure the tire contains the mountain/snowflake symbol which denotes that the tire performs a minimum of 110% better than a standard tire in a snow traction test.
• Shop early for your winter tires to avoid a tire shortage or even a complete supply sell out:
o A general guideline for installation is to install your tires once the temperature is consistently 7 degrees Celsius or less as regular all season tires loss their elasticity after this point. Winter tires are constructed specifically to retain their elasticity in colder temperatures.
o In Quebec, by law, you are mandated to have winter tires on all vehicles between December 15th and March 15th.
• Choose your tire size based on the optional tire and wheel size for the base model of your vehicle
• Purchase all 4 tires as using only 2 tires can cause the car to spin unexpectedly, fish tail, or under or oversteer. It can also cause the full benefits of ABS or traction control systems to be lost.
o All 4 tires should be the same size and have the same tread patterns and internal construction autel maxicheck pro.
• Consider purchasing chains and studs as well when preparing to drive in large volumes of snow or soft ice.
After installing your tires, keep the following in mind:
• Your vehicle will feel differently on the road so take the time to get used to its new traction and handling
• Your stopping distance will shorten to on average one half to a full car length shorter than when using all season tires
• New tires require a break in period so avoid any overly aggressive driving until you get used to the feel of acceleration, cornering, and braking
• New tires sometimes come with a mould release lubricant on them leftover from the production process which may lead to reduced traction initially.
